What Are Yamas in Ashtanga Yoga?

Yamas are ethical rules in Ashtanga Yoga for living right. “Yama” means control. They guide how to act well towards others and ourselves. These rules come from ancient texts. They help us be kind and honest in life.

The First Limb of Ashtanga Yoga: Yama

Yamas in Ashtanga Yoga are like promises we make to be our best selves. They teach us to be careful with our actions, words, and thoughts. This means not hurting others, being honest, not taking what isn’t ours, using our energy wisely, and not wanting too much.

There are five main Yamas:

  1. Ahimsa (non-violence)
  2. Satya (truthfulness)
  3. Asteya (not stealing)
  4. Brahmacharya (right use of energy)
  5. And aparigraha (non-greed)

They are big vows that make us better in how we act and live. By following them, we do good for ourselves and everyone around us. It’s about being kind, honest, and smart with our energy.
