Urban Sanctuary stands as a beacon of comfort, growth, and compassion in the wellness community. Nestled in the heart of Five Points, it operates from the historic Douglass Undertaking Building, a site steeped in rich history since the 1890s.
After various transformations, it has become Denver’s first black, woman-run wellness studio. With a commitment to preserving its historical significance, Urban Sanctuary has received a grant to maintain the building, honoring the legacy of the area’s Black history and culture.
Ali Duncan, the founder of Urban Sanctuary, envisioned a diverse and all-inclusive yoga studio. Since 2016, her studio has been a healing space for marginalized communities.
They focus on anti-racism practices and creating a true sense of belonging. As a Black woman business owner, Duncan is a staunch advocate for diversity. They actively works to integrate these values into every facet of the organization.
Urban Sanctuary stands as a testament to her dedication to promoting inclusivity, social justice, and community wellbeing.
Urban Sanctuary is more than a wellness studio; it’s a movement that champions inclusivity and community. Free classes for POC members and all-inclusive programs ensure that financial barriers do not hinder anyone from accessing wellness tools.
The studio also offers a unique 200-hour yoga teacher training program, Aquarius, which melds ancient wisdom with modern practices like trauma-informed and anti-racism training, embodying its mission to uplift and transform through movement and mindfulness.
